As a boy Fred was overweight, shy, lonely, asthmatic, and regularly taunted. Later these experiences inspired him to look for the “essential invisible” in people underneath whatever else they might be projecting into the world. “I used to cry to myself when I was alone, and I would cry through my fingers and make up songs on the piano.”
