Will Smith is reportedly in talks to play the Genie in the upcoming live action remake of Aladdin. The remake of the 1992 Disney classic will be directed by Guy Ritchie.
The original Genie was played by the late Robin Williams. When the film debuted in 1992 it grossed over $504 million at the box office, making it the highest grossing film that year. It also took home two different Academy Awards at the Oscars, one for Best Score and one for Best Song “A Whole New World.”
The remake’s producer Dan Lin wants to make sure that the remake is diverse.
“When I came in to make the movie, I wanted to make a diverse version of the movie. Luckily for me Guy Ritchie has the same vision and Disney has the same vision, so we’re not here to make Prince of Persia. We want to make a movie that’s authentic to that world.”
