Over the weekend, Victoria Beckham confirmed to Vogue that she and the four other original members of the Spice Girls were not reuniting for a world tour.
“I’m not going on tour. The girls aren’t going on tour,” Victoria Beckham commented during a preview of her autumn/winter 2018 collection on Saturday at New York Fashion Week.
Earlier this month, rumors circulated that the Spice Girls decided to reunite and each singer would receive �10 million each for a series of new projects. Exacerbated by pictures of the quintet enjoying an afternoon together at Geri Horner’s home posted on Instagram, fans of the British pop group thought a reunion world tour was in the works.
“It was so great to see the girls, “Beckham shared. “We had such a fun lunch. It was really, really, really lovely. I still speak to them all individually, but for us all to get together was really lovely. There’s something so strong in the message of what the Spice Girls stood for. What is that in the future? What does that look like? We were just bouncing ideas around. Brainstorming.”
The Spice Girls first topped the charts 22 years ago with their hit single “Wannabe.” Women around the world identified with the group’s messages about individuality, friendship, and girl power. Over two decades later, the Spice Girls’ music remains relevant as inequality and violence against women continue to run rampant.
“You know, there’s so much bad stuff going on, and the Spice Girls were about fun and celebrating individuality,” Beckham said. “I think there’s so much that the brand can do, and it’s such a positive message for young kids. What does that look like in the future? It’s not me in a catsuit.”
While a reunion world tour is off the table, Beckham’s comments make it seem as though other projects with the Spice Girls remain a possibility for the future. For 90s teeny boppers, let’s keep our fingers crossed that the Spice Girls, at the very least, release a new single, to reignite the flame of girl power.
