Selena Gomez has turned her Instagram account to private just days after being named the most followed person on the social media site for the second year in a row. The move reportedly came after Selena felt misquoted in the Billboard article about her being named their ‘Woman of the Year.’
In a now deleted post, Gomez made it clear that she didn’t like the way her article turned out. She seemed to be referring to a part in the article where she was quoted talking about a stuffed animal in her home. The writer said that Gomez rolled her eyes at the “ridiculous” item and said she couldn’t wait to “give it away to another person.”
“Never will I let another human guess my words ever again. Or invite them in my home. That is so hurtful. The most ‘ridiculous’ part of that is no one knowing my heart when I say things.”
Prior to that, Gomez had been thanking Billboard for the honor. The star has been very vocal about her distaste for too much social media and occasionally pulls back from the spotlight. Gomez actually has her assistant run her Instagram account because she has expressed that she has developed an unhealthy relationship with the app in the past. In fact, she doesn’t even know her own Instagram password.
“As soon as I became the most followed person on Instagram, I sort of freaked out. It had become so consuming to me. It’s what I woke up to and went to sleep to. I was an addict, and it felt like I was seeing things I didn’t want to see, like it was putting things in my head that I didn’t want to care about. I always end up feeling like shit when I look at Instagram. Which is why I’m kind of under the radar, ghosting it a bit.”
When Gomez went to rehab for anxiety and depression related to her lupus diagnosis, she also stepped back from social media during that time. Due to her health, she has come in and out of the spotlight repeatedly over the past few years.
