ABC has officially cast the first ever black Bachelorette. According to the Hollywood Reporter the announcement will be made on Jimmy Kimmel Live, Monday night.
The show generally waits until the season is over to announce the next contestant but they have chosen to do it ahead of time for the first time.
Rachel Lindsey will be the first ever black lead in the 33 seasons of The Bachelor and The Bachelorette. Rachel was on the current season competing for the love of Nick Viall but apparently with this spoiler alert will not be making it to the end of his season.
The show has long been criticized for its lack of diversity, but since the contestants are chosen from the previous seasons it’s had a long history of white contestants. The current season was actually the most diverse cast ever, with 22 white women and eight non-white women.
