4. The Color Purple (1985)
The sweeping historical epic from Steven Spielberg may hold an honored place in the Hollywood lexicon, but the year it came out, it was criminally overlooked by the awards circuit. In spite of receiving 11 Oscar nominations, Spielberg’s film went home empty-handed. Spielberg didn’t even score a Best Director nod for the work. As a result, the Color Purple holds the record for most Oscar nominations without a win.
