For a lot of today’s stars, social media is used as a helpful tool for promoting their work, sharing things with their fans and setting the record straight on rumors that circulate about them. Some celebs wouldn’t really exist without their social media accounts. And then there are those who prefer not to use it at all, or at least think it’s evil even if it’s necessary at times. Here are some famous people who you probably won’t find on Twitter, Instagram, Facebook or other social media hotspots anytime soon. Some have rather negative things to say about this contemporary communication trend.
1. Chris Pine
Chris Pine has expressed that he has “no interest” in social media and sees it as “the true dissolution of public and private.” He does recognize that other people do some great stuff with it, he just doesn’t have the interest himself. He says: “…people look at these visions of ‘reality’ that other people are putting out there and comparing themselves to that and trying to beat it. The authentic experience, where is that? Living the moment. That is something that we’re losing.”
2. Winona Ryder
Back in 2010 Winona Ryder admitted that she doesn’t use the internet at all. She was quoted as saying: “I don’t use the Internet, but apparently you can find out everything on it . . . I have my email on my BlackBerry, and that’s about it. I’ve never read a blog, ever.”
3. George Clooney
George Clooney once said that he would “rather have a rectal examination on live TV by a fellow with cold hands than have a Facebook page . . . ” Harsh. He has also said: “Why on God’s green earth would you be on Twitter? Because first of all, the worst thing you can do is make yourself more available, right? Because you’re going to be available to everybody. But also Twitter.” We get it, George.
4. Mary-Kate and Ashley Olsen
The Olsen twins have been making headlines for years…but they’re not giving the media any more information than they need to. Mary-Kate has said: “We’ve spent our whole lives trying to not let people have that accessibility, so it would go against everything we’ve done in our lives to not be in the public.”
5. Dakota Fanning
Dakota Fanning has claimed that she will never give in the social media craze. “I really don’t need to let people know where I am and what I’m doing. I feel like a lot of people want their privacy, but yet they tell people where they are”, adding, “I don’t have a Facebook or Twitter, and I won’t ever.”
6. Julia Roberts
Julia Roberts is well aware of both the appeal and the downfalls of social media. In 2013 she said: “It’s kind of like cotton candy: it looks so appealing and you just can’t resist getting in there, and then you just end up with sticky fingers and it lasted an instant.”
7. Daniel Radcliffe
Daniel Radcliffe takes his personal privacy pretty seriously, which might have something to do with how quickly he shot to fame as a young person in Harry Potter. About the challenges of fame, he said, “There’s certain things you can do to make it a lot easier on yourself . . . I don’t have Twitter and I don’t have Facebook, and I think that makes things a lot easier because if you go on Twitter and tell everybody what you’re doing moment to moment and then claim you want a private life, then no one is going to take that request seriously.”
8. Shailene Woodley
This quote from Shailene Woodley isn’t directly about social media, but one could assume it’s not her top priority hearing this: “I’m not a big technology person. I don’t even have a smartphone. I don’t even have a cell phone! And if I were to have one, it would be a flip-phone.” How retro.
9. Scarlett Johansson
In 2011 Scarlett Johansson shared: “I don’t have a Facebook or a Twitter account. I don’t know how I feel about this idea of, ‘Now, I’m eating dinner, and I want everyone to know that I’m having dinner at this time,’ or ‘I just mailed a letter and dropped off my kids.’ I can’t think of anything I’d rather do less than have to continuously share details of my everyday life.” The Kardashian/Jenners would disagree.
10. Anne Hathaway
The Les Mis actress says about social media, “I’m not as into it as a lot of other people – particularly other millennials. I’m not as into it, my life isn’t as defined by it. But it’s the world now so I want to be familiar.” She does have an Instagram and Facebook account, but isn’t obsessively on it.
11. Mila Kunis
Considering her husband, Ashton Kutcher, is a major influencer on Twitter with over 17 million followers, you’d think Mila would be into social media in a big way. Nope. She said: “It frightens me. It does. I just don’t think people need to know when I’m going to the rest room. What am I gonna tweet? Like, ‘Hey now I’m moving from room to room.’ I don’t really know what I would tweet people.” Maybe her husband could give her some tips.
12. Jennifer Lawrence
We’d actually love to hear what J Law would tweet about with her refreshingly candid approach to life. She’d no doubt rack up millions of followers in no time. However, she’s just not that into it. In fact, she said that having to write down random thoughts on Twitter sounds like “punishment” to her.
13. Kristin Stewart
The Twilight star doesn’t mince words when it comes to her feelings about Twitter: “Twitter f***s me over every day of my life. Because people go, ‘I’m sitting next to Kristen Stewart right now,’ and then [the paparazzi] show up … I see people on their phones, and I just want to take these cookies and throw them. It’s like ‘Get off your f***ing phone, and get a life!'”
