Gilmore Girls was a comedy-drama series that debuted on the WB in 2000. The show ran for seven seasons following the lives of mother-daughter duo, Lorelei (Lauren Graham) and Rory (Alexis Bledel) Gilmore. The show was set in a small town called Stars Hollow and featured an array of quirky characters. Known for its fast pace dialogue and pop culture references, Gilmore Girls was a star of the network. It even received an Emmy in 2004. We’ve found a few random facts that might change the way you view the show, so take a look at 8 things you never knew about Gilmore Girls.
1. Luke Was Supposed to be a Girl!
Originally, the writers had Luke’s character portrayed as a woman. But then the writers decided the show needed more testosterone. Luke was not supposed to be a regular cast member either, but the chemistry between him and Lauren Graeme was undeniable.
2. Alexis Bledel Doesn’t Like Coffee
Rory and Lorelei spent lots of their time sipping coffee from Luke’s Diner, but surprisingly the young star hates caffeine. So Alexis (Rory) used to drink a lot of soda on set in that mug.
3. You’ll Never Believe How Old Lane Was!
Rory’s best friend, Lane Kim, was played by Keiko Agena. When Keiko first started on Gilmore Girls, she was portraying a 16-year old high schooler. Keiko was actually 27 at the time!
4. Jess’ Spin-Off
Bad boy, Jess Mariano, played by Milo Ventimiglia, was supposed to have a spin-off after Gilmore Girls ended. The show was entitled The Windward Circle and it was supposed to be set in Venice, California following the young author. The WB wasn’t willing to spend the money on the show so it was scrapped.
5. Liza Weil Auditioned For Another Role
Liza Weil, who played Paris Gellar on the WB series, originally auditioned for the role of Rory. Producers didn’t think Liza was the right fit for Rory, so they wrote the character of Paris specifically for her.
6. Gilmore Girls Town, Stars Hollow, Is Real
The adorable small town depicted in the series is actually a real place. Fans can visit Washington Depot, Connecticut, only a half an hour drive from Hartford, and take a picture next to Doose’s Market.
7. Sookie Was Supposed To Be Played By Another Actress
The WB had originally cast Alex Borstein to play the role of Lorelei’s best friend, Sookie. But the ‘Family Guy’ actress couldn’t make it work with her busy schedule. She was featured on the show a few times, though.
8. Luke Was a Professional Baseball Player
Remember Luke’s signature backward baseball cap? Well, that wasn’t just a costume accessory. Scott Patterson, the actor who plays the grumpy cafe owner, was a minor league baseball pitcher before he started working on Gilmore Girls.
