The actress/comedian/host’s stage name stems from a whoopee cushion. Whoopi said, “If you get a little gassy, you’ve got to let it go. So people used to say to me, ‘You’re like a whoopee cushion.'” The first name stuck. As for Goldberg, Whoopi’s mother thought that she needed Jewish sounding name to make it in showbiz. Whoopi was actually born Caryn Elaine Johnson.
