In case you’re not up on the trend, vaping is the name given to using an electronic personal vaporizer, which contains a (usually) tobacco-free E-Liquid and is puffed on like a cigarette substitute. The liquid is generally made with propylene glycol and/or vegetable glycerin plus flavors, and the odorless vapor is considered far less harmful or offensive than cigarette smoke (although it’s not without controversy). These e-cigarettes and vaporizer devices can help people quit smoking without losing the pleasurable habit of inhaling something – something a nicotine patch can’t say. It has become a popular choice among celebrities who are trying to quit smoking or who just enjoy the pleasure of it. While old Hollywood might have helped cigarette smoking become popular back before we all knew how bad it was, today’s Hollywood types are promoting this healthier alternative as the new cool accessory.
1. Lindsay Lohan
Lindsay Lohan has probably been snapped smoking cigarettes more than any other young actress out there, but in 2011 she was spotted with an e-cigarette in hand. The photo actually got it’s own segment on Extra. Apparently Lindsay got her e-cig starter kit from her concerned pops. While some detractors say that these substitutes haven’t been studied or regulated enough, it’s no doubt a better alternative to puffing away on a nicotine stick, so it’s a step in the right direction for LiLo.
2. Katherine Heigl
Katherine Heigl has been openly discussing her vaping habit since 2010 when she actually did it on air during a Late Night appearance with David Letterman. She actually got him to take a puff after telling him how they helped her quit the real deal for good.
3. Katy Perry
Katy Perry has been spotted using a vape pen a variety of times. It was actually at the Golden Globes when she was spotted sharing one with Orlando Bloom that first ignited the rumors that the two might be dating.
4. Leonardo DiCaprio
At the head of the vaping vanguard is Leonardo Dicaprio. He made headlines this year when he was photographed vaping at the Screen Actor’s Guild Awards where he picked up a statue for Outstanding Performance by a Male Actor in a Leading Role for The Revenant. Some fans were fuming at these images, while others thought why shouldn’t he be open about the mainstream habit? One actress, however, has critiqued Leo’s vaping habit for a different reason. Miley Cyrus told Jimmy Kimmel: “I was feeling this emotion because there’s, like, a kind of etiquette-cy of when you’re there, you’ve got to pass that s—t, Leo. And he never did. So that was weird to me. He wasn’t passing the vape.”
5. Miley Cyrus
As mentioned above, Miley called out Leonardo DiCaprio for not passing along his vape pen to her at the Saturday Night Live 40th Anniversary Special. Her implication was that there was marijuana in the pen, so Jimmy Kimmel mentioned that perhaps it was just tobacco. Miley seemed to disagree saying: “He was looking at me like this [squints eyes] as I was performing, so he was like ‘I really like it.” Miley has not been shy about smoking all sorts of things, even lighting up a joint on stage on occasion.
6. Michelle Rodriguez
Fast and Furious actress Michelle Rodriguez has been spotted vaping while out and about shopping in New York City, as well as around town in Los Angeles.
7. Justin Bieber
Justin Bieber has been snapped heading into a vaping store that sells e-cigarettes and paraphernalia. According to the Vapor Spot in Westwood, he purchased what is called a mod and various vape juices to smoke from it.
8. Paris Hilton
Mogul and DJ Paris Hilton has been spotted with a vape pen and e-cigarettes in clubs many times, which most likely has to do with the fact that smoking cigarettes in nightclubs is often frowned upon. It certainly would keep things more tidy when she’s working the turntables.
9. Cara Delevingne
Supermodel Cara Delevingne has been spotted vaping many times, including courtside at a New York Knicks game where she was also spotted kissing Michelle Rodriguez.
10. Christina Milian
Singer Christina Milian is quite open about her vaping habits. She’s actually demonstrated how to use a Platinum Limited E Vapor pen on YouTube.
11. Charlie Sheen
Charlie Sheen doesn’t just like puffing away on vaporizers, he’s actually a partner in an aptly named e-cigarette company called NicoSheen. Charlie, a longtime smoker, reportedly started switching over to vaping after getting in trouble for smoking cigarettes inside buildings multiple times. It’s no doubt a better alternative for someone living with HIV.
12. Sienna Miller
Leonardo DiCaprio isn’t the only celebrity who has been spotted vaping at an awards show. In 2014 Sienna Miller was photographed vaping at the Golden Globes. She was also spotted with an e-cigarette in 2012 while shooting the film Just Like a Woman. She was an early adopter of the habit.
13. Catherine Zeta-Jones
Actress Catherine Zeta-Jones has been spotted puffing on an electronic cigarette in public a few times. Catherine decided to quit the real thing when her husband Michael Douglas was diagnosed with throat cancer, which he ultimately beat.
14. Bruno Mars
Bruno Mars switched to electronic cigarettes after his mother passed away from a brain aneurysm. He posted a photo of himself with one Twitter captioning it “This is for you mom.”

15. Kate Moss
Kate Moss has reportedly turned to vaping in an attempt to quit smoking real cigarettes. The photo below is supposedly an e-cig not a real one, but it’s a little unclear why the supermodel needs two at once. Guess you can never be too prepared.
16. Cheryl Cole
Singer Cheryl Cole supposedly switched to electronic cigarettes in an attempt to protect her vocal cords from the harmful effects of real cigarettes. She has posted a photo with members of her former band Girls Aloud with e-cigs in hand.
17. Lily Allen
Pop star Lily Allen is another singer who vapes. The singer featured the electronic cigarette in her video for the song “Hard Out Here”, which garnered her some negative attention since she makes the alternative to the real deal “look very appealing.”
18. Nikki Reed
Twilight actress Nikki Reed has reportedly been using electronic cigarettes since 2009, and she has been spotted using one alone as well as alongside Twilight co-star Kristin Stewart.
