Amy Schumer rose to fame following her time on Comedy Central’s Last Comic Standing. The raunchy and ridiculously honest comedienne has been gaining tremendous success as a late-night star in her own series, Inside Amy Schumer. Last summer she starred in Judd Apatow’s box office winner, Trainwreck. Aside from her hilarious sex jokes and dark humor, here are the eight reasons why we love Amy Schumer.
1. Amy Was a Boy in “Newsies”
Amy was cast as an extra in the 1992 musical, Newsies, as a boy. Amy described the experience saying, “I’m an extra, dressed as a boy. I’m wearing a newsboy cap and yelling about unions. I wasn’t mic’d, but if you pay really close attention, you can see me, I’m under Christian Bale and he’s spitting on me because he has a lisp. Also, he’s my number one crush in that movie — my top crush is Christian Bale in Newsies. We had a lot of interactions, but he thought I was a boy so he would usually just kind of gossip with me about things, like, ‘Oh I just hooked up with that girl, you know what that’s like, bro?’ And I was like, ‘Yeah, I do!'”
2. We Would Have Loved Her in High School
Amy Schumer grew up on the Upper East Side of Manhattan in a wealthy family. Her parents owned a baby furniture company. But when Amy was nine, her father was diagnosed with multiple sclerosis and her parents divorced three years later. Amy says that comedy helped her to cope with her family falling apart. When Amy attended South Side High School in Rockville she was voted both “Class Clown” and “Teacher’s Worst Nightmare.” We all know Amy would have kept high school interesting and I’m sure she was a blast at keggers.
3. She Was a TOE Model
Yes, you read that right. Amy was a toe model in college. Not a foot model, just toes. Amy said, “Just my toes, and only on one foot, because shit kind of hits the fan once you got past the toes on my feet. But my toes are beautiful, in perfect order.” Amy claims she was paid per toe, and the gig helped her earn some extra money while she was attending Towson University in Maryland.
4. Her Famous Fairy Godmother
Amy’s godmother is Who’s The Boss? actress, Judith Light. The comedienne said, “Both my mom and dad chose Judith Light. She lived across the hall from us when I was a kid, living on the Upper East Side. My parents ended up getting divorced, but she didn’t want to choose between them as friends, so they both chose her.”
5. Her Eclectic Taste in Men
Amy has dated a few other famous people and she’s never been shy about why it didn’t work out with them. She dated professional wrestler Dolph Ziggler, but broke up with him saying the sex was “too athletic.” She also dated fellow comedian, Anthony Jeselnik, but they split because she says he wasn’t “attentive enough.” Schumer states that her Hollywood crushes are Joaquin Phoenix and Christian Bale, saying, “I like speech impediments and tiny deformities.”
6. Her Secret to Looking Good
“I eat and drink like a normal person. And I love sex. Oil of Olay is my best kept secret!” Amy went on to say, “It’s hard to be a girl, you’re judged so much on your appearance, you’re onstage being looked at, you’re on camera, it’s hard. I’m just like, ‘this is what I look like.’ Sometimes I’ll say that in the mirror, ‘This is what you look like. You’re beautiful, this is it. You’re a good person.'” Great words to live by.
7. Her Inspiration
The funny lady cites her role models as Shirley Temple, Lucille Ball and Carol Burnett and says growing up she loved watching Laverne & Shirley, Kate & Allie, Bewitched and I Dream of Jeannie. We loved those shows too!
8. She’s Winning in a Man’s World
Late-night comedy has been ruled by men for decades, but Chelsea Handler opened the door for late-night female hosts back in the early 2000’s. Her special, Amy Schumer: Mostly Sex Stuff, was one of Comedy Central’s highest-rated and most-watched stand-up specials in 2012, drawing over 1.6 million viewers for its premiere. After the success of her stand-up special, Comedy Central gave Schumer her own show in 2013. Inside Amy Schumer, the provocatively hilarious sketch comedy series, has been met with positive reviews. It is now on its third season. Amy Schumer was also the first female comic to perform on both The Ellen Degeneres Show and Late Night with Jimmy Fallon.
