Say what you will about sorority girl stereotypes. Lots of college women join these campus clubs to make friends and do charity work. Some rush the sisterhood for future networking connections. Still, plenty more just want to party it up at fraternity mixers. The truth is, there are a wide range of people drawn to these organizations, including a few famous faces. 1. Elizabeth Banks, Delta Delta Delta
Hunger Games actress Elizabeth Banks was a Tri-Delt at the University of Pennsylvania. She recently told Craig Ferguson that she met her future husband on a fraternity lawn during her first day of college back in 1992. She was a freshman, and joked that he was trying to take advantage of the new girl on the block. Obviously things worked out, as the two have been happily married since 2003.
2. Lucy Liu, Chi Omega
Charlie’s Angels‘ Lucy Liu joined the Chi Omega sorority when she was an NYU transfer student at the University of Michigan. During her time as an Asian Studies major there, she was was active in the theater. She played the lead in a campus production of Alice in Wonderland.
3. Sheryl Crow, Kappa Alpha Theta
Singer Sheryl Crow attended the University of Missouri where she joined Kappa Alpha Theta. She also joined Sigma Alpha Iota, an international musical sisterhood, and earned a spot on the national honor society known as Omicron Delta Kappa. That’s a lot of Greek!
4. Katie Couric, Delta Delta Delta
It’s not hard to imagine perky newscaster Katie Couric as a sorority girl. While majoring in American Studies at the University of Virginia, she was a member of Delta Delta Delta. She’s still active with one of Tri-Delt’s pet charities, St. Jude’s Children’s Research Hospital.
5. Mariska Hargitay, Kappa Kappa Gamma
Before she solved crimes on Law & Order: SVU, Mariska Hargitay attended UCLA’s School of Theater, Film and Television. She was a Kappa Kappa Gamma girl while there. She dropped out before completing her degree, but that hasn’t hurt her acting career.
6. Danica McKellar, Alpha Delta Pi
It turns out Winnie Cooper from The Wonder Years had brains to match her beauty. Actress Danica McKellar was a Mathematics student at UCLA. As a member of the Alpha Delta Pi sorority, she tutored her sisters in calculus as the head of the study group program. In 1998, she made math history by proving a groundbreaking physics theorem. After graduating summa cum laude, McKellar conintued to act, write math books and recently competed on Dancing with the Stars. That makes her one of the most versatile celebrity sorority girls around.
7. Sophia Bush, Kappa Kappa Gamma
One Tree Hill actress Sophia Bush attended the University of Southern California majoring in journalism. During her junior year at USC, she joined Kappa Kappa Gamma where she served as Social Chair. She seems like she would make a fun Big Sister.
8. Melissa Rycroft, Alpha Chi Omega
It’s not surprising to find bubbly Melissa Rycroft among our celebrity sorority girls, at least if you consider reality TV stars to be celebrities. The Bachelor and Dancing with the Stars alum attended the University of North Texas, majoring in marketing. She joined the Alpha Chi Omega sisterhood before graduating and joining the Dallas Cowboys Cheerleaders sisterhood.
9. Ashley Judd, Kappa Kappa Gamma
Ashley Judd had a lot of school spirit while studying French at the University of Kentucky. She was a Kappa Kappa Gamma sorority girl there. She’s still an avid supporter of her college basketball team, the Wildcats, and is often seen cheering them on in the stands.
10. Angela Kinsey, Chi Omega
Emmy award winning actress, Angela Kinsey, who played uptight accountant on The Office, was an English major at Baylor University in Texas. While there, she joined the Chi Omega sorority, played intramural softball and took part in many theatrical productions. Apparently real life Angela is nothing like the strait-laced Angela she played on TV.
