As an executive producer of 13 Reasons Why, Selena Gomez has had to speak out and address the controversy and backlash that has been coming out against the show.
The 24-year-old acknowledged that it’s a tough topic but explained that they stayed true to the book during production.
“We stayed very true to the book and that’s initially what Jay Asher created, was a beautifully tragic, complicated yet suspenseful story, and I think that’s what we wanted to do. We wanted to do it justice and, yeah, [the backlash is] going to come no matter what. It’s not an easy subject to talk about, but I’m very fortunate with how it’s doing.”
Many people have expressed concerns that the suicide content of the show will trigger viewers or lead to copycat behaviors. Selena herself is familiar with the struggles of anxiety and depression but is personally happy with the project.
